Vanity unit sizes: how to choose

A vanity unit sets both the place of the basin and the storage. The right size makes the room feel orderly; the wrong one can even get in the way of a door. This guide shows how to measure your bathroom and which width fits your space.

How to measure

Measure the bathroom precisely before you choose a unit: a difference of a few centimetres can decide whether a door or drawer opens. Note down:

  • Width: wall to wall, where the unit will stand;
  • Waste and water pipes: where the pipe comes out and how far it is from the wall;
  • Door, radiator, shower screen: how much space the door needs to swing and where nearby fittings sit;
  • Clear space: there must be enough room left to reach the WC and the shower.

One practical tip: a difference of even 20–30 mm can affect a door swing or a drawer, so measure twice.

  • Wall-to-wall width
  • Pipe position and distance from the wall
  • Door swing
  • Radiator and shower screen
  • Access to the WC and the shower

Which width to choose

The width of the unit depends on the size of the bathroom and how it is used:

  • 40–50 cm: a compact solution for a guest WC or a narrow bathroom. Such units often have a reduced depth too.
  • 55–67 cm: the most popular choice for a family bathroom, with a comfortable basin and enough storage.
  • 76–100 cm: for a larger bathroom, when you want a wide basin and plenty of drawers.

If space is tight, choose a unit with drawers: a deep drawer takes even tall bottles and keeps everything within reach.

Wall-hung or floor-standing

A wall-hung unit does not touch the floor: it is easy to clean underneath, and the bathroom looks more spacious. Such a unit must be fixed to a solid wall or reinforced studwork with the correct fixings. Fitted correctly, wall-hung furniture can bear 70 kg.

A floor-standing unit stands firmly on the floor, can carry heavier loads and is convenient when the pipes run low or the wall is not built to bear weight.

Mirror and tall unit

The mirror should follow the width of the unit: an 80 cm vanity pairs well with an 80 cm mirror. If you need storage, choose a mirror cabinet: it is a mirror and shelves in one, and built-in LED lighting shows your face in natural light.

A tall unit uses height rather than floor area: a slim unit 30–40 cm wide holds towels and supplies. Integra's tall units are 40 cm wide and 180 cm high.

Furniture care

VitrA bathroom furniture is made of moisture-resistant materials: Eco MDF, the Aqua Protect surface and high-density MDF that does not crack. Even so, furniture with a wood-based core needs the right care:

  • wipe drops and wet areas dry at once: a surface left wet shortens the life of the furniture;
  • never wash the furniture with water; wiping with a damp cloth is enough;
  • do not use acid-based cleaners, tile cleaners included;
  • clean the mirror with warm, soapy water and a damp cotton cloth, then dry it thoroughly;
  • keep the bathroom well ventilated.

Frequently asked questions

Which vanity size is best for a small bathroom?

In most small bathrooms and guest WCs, units 40–60 cm wide work best. Choose deep drawers: they hold more.

Can I order a unit to my bathroom's measurements?

Each VitrA furniture range is produced as standard in several sizes to suit different bathrooms. For special cases, contact us and we will find the best option together.

Does every basin fit every unit?

In most VitrA ranges, basins and furniture are designed as a pair. Our consultants will advise which basin and unit best suit your needs.

How much weight can a wall-hung unit bear?

Fitted correctly, wall-hung furniture has a bearing capacity of 70 kg, so it matters that the unit is fixed to a solid wall with the correct fixings.

Does sunlight harm the furniture?

A finish with a natural coating can change colour in sunlight, so protect such furniture from direct sun.
